LovePaws® wants to scratch the surface deeper - what kind of story lies behind the name?

LovePaws® features one retailer every month. In the interviews, you will hear the stories of different companies and get to know their operations. It will be exciting to see what all is revealed along the way!

First, you will hear from Kirsu Veterinary Clinic, with veterinarian Marianna Dykas as the interviewee.

Thank you Marianna for sharing your story with us!

We provide basic veterinary medicine and preventive healthcare for dogs and cats. We operate in both Vantaa Korso and Pornainen.

We also do home visits. Owner-veterinarian Marianna Dykas works mainly, while Maiju Tamminen works part-time in Korso, focusing on surgical patients.

Owner and veterinarian of Kirsu Veterinary Clinic Marianne Dykas

Your first pet? What pets do you currently have? First contact / what made you "fall in love" with dogs?

My first pet was a guinea pig named Eetu (who I think was a girl ;) ) that I got when I was 10. While I was an exchange student at 17, my family had meanwhile adopted a Beagle named Jokeman, who was a greedy couch potato and defended his rights strongly XD

I had my first horse when I was 14, and I had horses for ten years, after which I kind of traded my hobby of horses for dogs, and got my first beloved Westie, Nappi. Nappi was the mother of my small-scale breeding, but 12 years later I got another horse as a "graduation gift" from veterinary medicine and the dogs remained "just" family members.

There are no more Westies, but my husband's bulldog, who is currently 9 years old, lives at home. Horse work, on the other hand, was put on hold again after my horse was injured and we had children. I still own the horse in question, as well as its one-year-old foal, and another foal is expected to be born in the summer.

What is your specialty, what sets you apart from your competitors?

Many animals and their owners become more stressed during so-called normal times.
We strive to treat animals in a more relaxed, home-like environment.
We want to emphasize preventive healthcare and thus prolonging a good life, e.g. the importance of dental care, and not treatment only after the animal is already sick.

What made you interested in LovePaws® paw wax? / Why do you want to recommend it?
LovePaws for your customers?

Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem. If even some of these treatments can be replaced non-pharmaceutically - and if possible, even with natural products - it will improve our shared One Health life and health of humans and animals.

What made you become a veterinarian? Is there a story or memory associated with your choice of profession?

I had loved animals since I was little, but I couldn't afford to study to become a veterinarian. I even finished high school in a couple of years just so I could get out of there as quickly as possible.

I was into horses and later a little bit of dogs (Westerns).

After working for almost 10 years after high school, after working in various jobs, I thought about trying to get into veterinary medicine. After hard work, a position opened up in veterinary medicine, and of course it was hard work for 6 years, but the work is enjoyable.

How did Kirsu get its start?

When I returned from my first maternity leave to work, Kirsu came up for sale, as the previous owner had allergies that prevented him from continuing in his beloved job. He had had Kirsu for 20 years. Our ideas matched and we agreed on a deal, so Kirsu continued to operate without interruption, and has been in my ownership for over 3 years now.

What makes you happy in your job?

Happy animals and people when I can help them. The best are long-term clients who visit regularly and it can be seen that proactive care keeps the animal healthy longer and allows it to live a good life for the joy of its owner.

An unforgettable customer story, is there one that stands out above the rest?

One cat came to us regularly for check-ups, vaccinations, and an annual check-up.
in dental care. He was over 20 years old (and he still went to dental care
sedation), i.e. the patient in question was a good example of how preventive care can provide better conditions for a longer and healthier life.

There are also many patients whose symptoms have previously been treated several times with medication, but only after trying to find the causes and looking for more natural treatments (diet and other underlying causes, balancing the body, and non-drug treatments) have they been able to break free from the long cycle of illness and constant medication.

Is there anything special you want to tell LovePaws followers?

Anticipatory and preventative care gives both the pet and the owner a longer, healthier life, and is often cheaper and much easier than treating diseases.

The lives and health of people and animals go hand in hand, let's take care together so that we can spend a long, wonderful, peaceful life together!
